Voortrekker (Pioneer) Monument

The Dutch (Afrikaans) migrated NE from Cape Town in 1834 to what is now Pretoria. They engaged in battles with the Zulu tribe. Surrounded by Zulu warriors they made a covenant with God, on December 16th, asking that if He gives them the victory, they will erect a monument on the very spot. The monument has an open ceiling allowing the sun to shine into the monument on December 16th. The reliefs on the walls reminded me of the Americans' moving west in covered wagons.

The monument and looking back at the Union Building in the distance from on top.
